{"id":56,"date":"2015-05-06T00:30:12","date_gmt":"2015-05-06T00:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jpbuffington.com\/?p=56"},"modified":"2015-05-06T01:59:37","modified_gmt":"2015-05-06T01:59:37","slug":"kodak-vr35-k12-35mm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jpbuffington.com\/?p=56","title":{"rendered":"Kodak VR35  k12 35mm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was excited about this thrift store find.\u00a0 A like new Kodak VR35\u00a0k12 35mm point and shoot still in it&#8217;s original box.\u00a0 All for the low price of $2.99.\u00a0 This price tag was next to the original price tag of $149.97 from KMart.\u00a0 Some research shows this camera originally retailed for $200.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.chicagotribune.com\/1986-08-08\/entertainment\/8602270456_1_disc-camera-auto-flash-automatic-film\">Chicago Tribune<\/a>\u00a0noted in 1986 that this was Kodak&#8217;s grand return to the 35mm format after a 17 year absence.\u00a0 I was hopeful on my ride home that this neat little camera with a seemingly fast 35\/2.8 lens would prove a rightful place among my Nikon L35AF, Olympus mju and mjuII.\u00a0 The bonus is that this camera <em>looked<\/em> cool.\u00a0 All I needed was a roll of film and a battery.\u00a0 First I noticed that it took a proprietary battery (no doubt long out of manufacture) however a 9 volt would work as well.\u00a0 Put in a fresh roll of Kodak ultramax 400 and a new 9 volt battery and I was ready.<\/p>\n<p>Let me just say, this camera is utterly craptastic!\u00a0 I mean it is so crappy that it is fantastical that Kodak chose this piece of excrement as it&#8217;s heralded return to 35mm camera format.\u00a0 First I notice that it is on the chunky side.\u00a0 I mean chunky.\u00a0 Like bigger than my Nikon fg-20 with 50\/1.8 attached.\u00a0 I am not opposed to a well built camera being on the large size however this hunk of plastic is just that, a hunk of cheap plastic.\u00a0 It reeks of it.\u00a0 The shutter button feels cheap, focus never locks on the first attempt and there are no manual overrides of any sort.\u00a0 No backlight compensation button, no manual shutoff for the flash, nothing.\u00a0 Forget shooting into the sun.\u00a0 Forget choosing not to use the flash.\u00a0 This\u00a0camera just\u00a0does one thing and\u00a0that it does poorly.<\/p>\n<p>I would love to share some images from the roll of\u00a0film I shot.\u00a0 I was hoping the lens would be the one saving grace.\u00a0 Alas this was not to be.\u00a0 The film would not rewind even though the rewind motor spins and spins and spins.\u00a0 I\u00a0opened the back thinking surely it had rewound after several minutes.\u00a0\u00a0Opened it up and\u00a0there was all the exposed film, no ruined by light. In fact, it is still in there 2 weeks later (today).\u00a0 This led me to use it\u00a0as my first film review due to being completely amazed at how crappy this camera is.\u00a0 I have a bunch of old point and shoots from the 80&#8217;s and 90&#8217;s, some better than others but none as utterly disappointing as this one.\u00a0\u00a0What I want to know is,\u00a0how much did\u00a0Kodak pay the writer for the Chicago Tribune in 1986 to write such a\u00a0B.S. article praising this camera?\u00a0 Many, many, many better options in the\u00a0cluttered field of auto focus point in shoots in 1986.\u00a0 The field of fast, fixed lens P&amp;S&#8217;s yielded many superb\u00a0performers.\u00a0 This was not one of them.  The Kodak VR35 k12 35mm is (my) winner of the worst camera I have ever used awarding it a place at the top with distinction as my first film camera review.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jpbuffington.org\/photos\/i-jk6WRmJ\/0\/M\/i-jk6WRmJ-M.jpg\" alt=\"kodak vr35\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jpbuffington.org\/photos\/i-zvHCnLK\/0\/M\/i-zvHCnLK-M.jpg\" alt=\"kodak vr35 \" \/><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:  I was wrong, it does have two features to change things up.  A self timer and a fill flash button.
